Signs

So, you need to get the message out, but nobody’s buying? The wise old owls of the city have decreed your sign would be more of an eyesore than a boon to the community. Sometimes the permitting process can be a real drag on your bottom line. Many traditional little towns and suburbs enjoy the quiet, uncluttered style they have spent years defending. Maybe you even live in such a place yourself.

What is a business owner to do? If your first attempt at meeting the city’s strict codes for allowable signage fails, then perhaps you need to go back to the drawing board. A little tweak here and an upgrade there… maybe they will change their minds. And maybe they won’t. This is all part of the process and it can be a long, drawn out one.

The way to see the issue is to look at it from their point of view. What does your sign bring to the neighborhood? How can it serve your purpose without disrupting; and possibly even bringing some benefit to the community? If you plan to install an LED sign, will you donate time for community messages on your display? If you put in a monument sign, can it reflect the architectural themes within the town? Will it be an impediment to motorists or will it state quick, easy to read messages that do not distract from or block a driver’s view?

Be sure with historical buildings that you will be in a fight for your business life! Many buildings deemed as landmarks will often come with even more restrictions than normal. Take all these things into consideration as you plan out your signage. The location of your business will greatly determine the overall process of approval. The type of signs you consider should be based in research of these ordinances. That way, you already have an advantage during the permitting process.
